Frequently Asked Questions
No Chatbox?
Nope. FicMachine isn't a chatbot. It's essentially a text editor, but a lot more fun. You and the AI write a story together, taking turns in the same document.
You're not supposed to just mash Continue and watch text appear. The fun starts when you write the opening of a scene, the first words of a line of dialogue, a half-finished thought, and then let the AI surprise you with what comes next.
Don't like what it wrote? It happens all the time. Edit it. Trim it. Change the output, or rewrite the starting paragraph and hit Continue again. That back-and-forth — writing a beat, seeing where the AI takes it, then steering it further — is how your story emerges. You're always in control, but you're also allowing yourself to be surprised.
If you need more direct control, you have AI Instructions (persistent directions the AI follows throughout the story) and Author's Notes (a direct instruction for the next generation). Between those and your own writing, you can guide the AI as loosely or tightly as you want. See the Tutorial for more information.
What are Scenarios?
A Scenario is a story seed created by the community. It gives the AI the context it needs to start a story without you having to explain everything from scratch.
Instead of starting with a blank page, you can browse Scenarios to find a setting you like.
Many Scenarios are customizable. Usually, you can define who your protagonist is and change the starting conditions. After you start a story, you can change anything or even rewrite the premise entirely. A Scenario is just the launchpad; where you go is up to you.
Can I create my own Scenarios?
Yes. First, register an account. Afterwards, create a scenario in the Start button on the top left.
Your Scenarios are private unless you decide to publish them.
Is my stuff private?
